Patchogue Medford:

The Team No One Wants To See In The Playoffs!
&
An Interview With Alexa D'Onofrio

Pat-Med, as they are known around Suffolk county, was not on anyone's radar this year. In fact, when looking over schedules, all the top teams might have looked past them. Well guess what, NO ONE is looking past them now.

After stunning Suffolk County with a 2-0 win over Suffolk's top offensive team in Brentwood, those who hadn't known of Pat-Med have now taken notice.

One of the main reasons for Pat-Med's emergence is Alexa D'Onofrio. Not only has she given everyone hitting fits, she is also making noise at the plate. Alexa drove in the insurance run vs. Brentwood, went 3-3 vs. Sachem East and 2-3 vs. Bellport all wins for Pat-Med. On the mound Alexa is driving people nuts. After 8 games she is averaging 13 strike outs per game and out of 180 outs her team has recorded, 103 have been by strike outs. Alexa struck out 21 of 30 outs recorded vs. Ward Melville and 19 of 21 vs. Walt Whitman.

We caught up with Alexa on an off day and had the chance to ask her a few questions.

Fastpitch World: Alexa you are having a great season, what do you attribute it to?

Alexa: "I worked very hard in the off-season; I really wanted to have a good senior year and the team just seems to step it up against the top teams. I started seeing Shari Edwards for pitching and she not only helped me mechanically but also mentally. My dad and I also think that pitching from 43' in the summer and fall really made a big difference. "

FPW: You have been hitting the ball as well, it seems like you have become a complete player, how does that feel?

Alexa: " It really feels great, I have a cage in my back yard and I get out there as much as I can."

FPW: NO one gave Pat-Med a chance including us here at FPW. Now you are the team that no one wants to play. After knocking out arguably the best team in Suffolk, Brentwood, on the road how was the bus ride home?

Alexa: " It felt really good to beat one of the top teams, we were so happy that we played team ball. I only struck out 6 batters in that game so it was a great ride home because we all had a part in the win."

FPW: Facing Brentwood you had to go against 2 of your best friends in the Flint sisters. In fact Nicole has been having a great year as well on the mound. Did this game have any special meaning for you?

Alexa: " Yes, because of my best friends being on the other team. We talk after every game and tell each other what happened in the game. We share everything together so it was exciting. I hit Nicole in the arm with a pitch, I am glad it was her left arm not her pitching arm. We haven't beat Brentwood since I was in 9th grade so to beat them in my senior year when they are so good really meant a lot to me. "

FPW: Pat-Med is playing the role of spoilers unlike anyone in the past. Do you think you are spoilers or a team that has a chance to go all the way?

Alexa: " We are enjoying the role of spoilers but we think if we play a little more consistent we have a shot just like everyone else. Our team goal was to make the playoffs, we haven't been there since 2006 so it was a team and personal goal we set."

FPW: Have you chosen a college to attend as of yet?

Alexa: " Minnesota State U. "

FPW: Why Minnesota, it's pretty cold there.

Alexa: " I visited a few schools and just fell in love with everything and everyone there. They really made me feel wanted and it just felt right. "

FPW: Which win this season meant the most to you?

Alexa: " Brentwood, playing against my friends was my biggest challenge of the year, they could hit and they were undefeated. "

FPW: Alexa good luck with the rest of the season and we hope everything keeps going in the right direction for you and your teammates.

Pat-Med has opened our eyes here at Fastpitch World and has broken into the top ten in this weeks poll. Keep a look out for Pat-Med as they look to continue their winning ways.
