Game Rundown:
Two weeks into the season Whitman was 2-5 and on a downward slide. The only constant was Christine Lucido throwing good enough to keep Whitman in every game and the play of SS Lauren Alexander. The slick fielding SS hit .441 to lead Whitman.
Today's pitching match up features two of Suffolk's finer pitchers in Mason and Lucido. The two are opponents on the field and good friends off the field as they played summer ball with each other and formed a one/two punch that helped their team finish in 4th place at the ASA Nationals last year.
After a scoreless first inning Lucido lead off the second and drove a 2-2 pitch over the right centerfield fence for a 1-0 Whitman lead. Whitman's 3rd started with back to back walks, the next batter attempted a sac bunt but 3rd baseman Maggie Engellenner charged hard and got the force at third for the first out. Whitman's next hitter hit a hard ground ball to second that looked like a inning ending double play ball. The throw to 2nd was a little wide and SS Fran Busa made a nice play to get the force but on the transition to throw the ball she lost the handle and didn't get the out at first and a run scored on the play. On the play, the umpire said she had no control and everyone was safe. Lucido stepped up to the plate and drove a base hit up the middle for an RBI single and Whitman had a 3-0 lead. Maria Pezzino walked to load the bases. Mason got a pop out to 1st for the second out and it looked like she got out of trouble when she got Lauren Fitzpatrick to hit a fly ball to left but the ball was misplayed and turned into a 3 run double. Lauren then stole 3rd and scored as the ball went into the outfield for a 7-0 Whitman lead. The sixth inning saw Smithtown record 2 quick outs on 3 pitches but Sam Fregenti had something else on her mind as she drove the 1st pitch she saw over the centerfield fence for a solo homer and a 8-0 lead.
Meanwhile Christine Lucido was cruising along as she was throwing a 2 hit shutout into the sixth and had retired 6 straight batters striking out 5 of them. Smithtown's last chance ended with a 2 out single by Nicole O'Donnell (her second hit of the game) in the 7th that was followed by a looking third strike for the 3rd out.
Whitman faces Bay Shore on Friday at BS. For the rubber game as they have split the season series.
Final Score: Walt Whitman 8, Smithtown East 0
