Game Rundown:
Tonight's match up features Whitman's Christine Lucido vs. Sachem East Julie DeCarmine.
After a scoreless 1st inning Whitman's Maria Pezzino led off the 2nd with an infield single just out of the reach of Sachems 2nd baseman. Jackie Wurtz followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Pezzino into scoring position. Lauren Fitzpatrick drove a single to center just out of the reach of shortstop Amber O'Malley and Maria had to hold up to make sure the ball wasn't caught. On the errant throw home Fitzpatrick took second. DeCarmine struck out the next 2 hitters to end Whitman's threat.
In the top of the 3rd Lauren Alexander led off with a single and then stole 2nd. Ali Delprete singled to right and quickly stole 2nd to put 2 runners in scoring position. DeCarmine struck out the next 2 hitters before walking Maris Pezzino to load the bases. Julia then struck out the next hitter leaving the bases loaded. After 2 ½ innings Whitman had stranded 6 runners. In the bottom of the 3rd Sami Smith singled with 2 outs and then stole second base. With the count 2-2 Smith was again in motion but Jackie Wurtz came up throwing and caught Smith attempting to steal 3rd. Both pitchers were cruising along as Lucido was in complete control keeping Sachem in check and DeCarmine flirted in and out of danger but was big when she needed to be. After having the bases loaded on her in the 3rd DeCarmine struck out the side in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings and 11 of the last 12 outs recorded were by strike out. After 5 full innings we had a real old fashioned pitching duel with Whitman's Lucido striking out 6 and throwing a 1 hitter and DeCarmine had a 4 hitter with 12 strike outs.
In the bottom of the 7th Sachem's lead off hitter reached on a throwing error, 2 misplayed bunt's later and Sachem had bases loaded and no one out. With 0 outs and the bases loaded Sachem again went to the bunt but a pop up to the catcher gave Whitman their first out and you almost had the feeling that they might get out of the jam. Then the unexpected happened, Lucido threw a wild pitch and the game looked to be over but for some reason the runner held at third and it seemed Whitman had dodged a bullet, but the runner on first went too far and was trapped, Wurtz threw down to pick her off and when she did Caturano came diving home with the winning run. Sachem 1, Whitman 0.
Final Score: Sachem East 1, Walt Whitman 0
