Game Rundown:

Today's contest pits 2 of Long Island's top teams as Ward Melville plays Commack. Commack comes in as a quiet giant. They have been rolling along almost unnoticed and all they have done is roll to a 9-1 record. There only loss was to undefeated Bay Shore where they went into the sixth inning with a 0-0 score in a game they eventually lost 3-2. Commack has played the complete game scoring 63 runs and only allowing 22 runs against.

Ward Melville comes in as a secret to no one. Led by Kaitlyn Meade Melville is always in the game. Melville comes in at 7-3 with big wins against Connetquot, Sachem east and Pat-Med. Melville has been able to keep opponents off the board with solid pitching and defense but the offense has yet to make an appearance this year. Melville has scored 24 runs and allowed 22 so every game becomes a pressure cooker for the Melville squad.

Melville leftfielder Danielle Shangold led off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle and was moved to 2nd on an infield groundout. Chrissy Theiss then hit a groundball that was misplayed and Danielle scored all the way from 2nd to give Melville a 1-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Meade opened up the 2nd with a lead off double and was stranded on base as Commack's defense stepped up to the challenge. A great play by first baseman Stephanie Rosenberg held Meade at 2nd. Kaitlyn moved to 3rd on a ground out and then Annie Iacopelli struck out the next hitter to end the threat.

In Commack's 4th half of the inning Kaitlyn Meade seemed to lose the plate as she walked 4 hitters to even the score at 1. With one out she got a strikeout and then made a diving catch on a bunt attempt to work her way out of her own jam. In Commack's 5th inning Kaitlyn put herself in a bad way again by walking the first 2 hitters. Daniella Pusateri sac bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd. A slow roller to third looked like it was going to load the bases but a great fake throw by 3rd baseman Jamie Schmahl trapped Kristina Amato at 3rd for the second out. Megan Apper stepped up to the plate with 1st and 2nd and 2 outs and crushed a line drive up the middle that hit Kaitlyn square on the leg for the first Commack hit of the game. Kaitlyn went down hard and the crowd was quiet while everyone hoped she was OK. After a few minutes Kaitlyn was helped to her feet and carried off the field to a round of applause by everyone in attendance. Third baseman Jamie Schmahl took over a very unpleasant situation as she came in with the bases loaded and 2 out. Megan Kristol came in to play second and Courtney Caputo moved over to 3rd. On Jamie's first pitch she induced a pop out to first to escape the trouble and keep the score tied at 1.

Commack's Shannon McQueeney lead off the 6th with a walk and stole 2nd. Rosenberg singled up the middle to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Shayna Burgess pinch ran for Rosenberg and quickly stole 2nd uncontested by Melville. With one out Kristina Amato drove a 2-2 pitch into left center field for a 2 run double. Kristina moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Nicole Hagenah was then hit by a pitch and stole 2nd. After a strikeout Michelle Andrews singled to left to drive in 2 more runs but was thrown out at second trying to stretch her hit into a double. Commack scored 4 runs to take a 5-1 lead and would go on to win the game by that score.

Final Score:  Commack 5, Ward Melville 1
