Game Rundown:
In the top of the first inning, sophomore pitcher, Nicole Ehlinger, appeared to coast through the first two batters with consecutive strikeouts. The dangerous #3 batter, Alexa Lampasona, came to the plate for Westhampton and on a 1 and 2 count hit a texas-leaguer to right field for the first hit of the game. Stepping to the plate was clean-up batter, senior pitcher, Alyssa Clancy. Clancy drove the second pitch to deep left field which appeared to be destined to find the grass in left but was read perfectly by left fielder, Devan Valoroso, for the final out.
In the bottom of the first, Hauppauge's lead-off batter, Sandy Hawthorne, with a 1-2 count, hit the next pitch over the left fielders head for a stand-up double. #2 batter, Devon Valoroso, hit a perfect lefty slap to the short stop and beat out the throw to first and Hawthorne advanced to third. With runners on 1st and 3rd , no outs, Hauppauge's #3 batter stepped to the plate. Taking the first pitch for ball one, Valoroso took second via defensive indifference. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs, Clancy was able to induce the #3 batter to swing at a high pitch popping out to shortstop, Lampansona. Clancy then beared down striking out the #5 batter and with a 2-2 count the #6 batter grounded out to third base to end the scoring threat and the inning.
Hauppauge's next scoring threat was in the 4th inning when Alexis lead-off the inning with a well placed bunt and was safe at first on a fielding error. On the very next pitch, Drago hit a well placed line-drive to the fence in right center field. Center fielder Julia Christ played the ball off the fence perfectly threw a perfect relay to first baseman, Sophia Geraci who spun around quickly throwing a perfect strike to catcher, Haley Fink, who tagged a sliding Gonzalez at home for the first out of the inning. Drago advance to third on the throw home. With a runner on third and one out, Again, Clancy had to bear down and induced to consecutive line-drives to first base to end the scoring threat.
Westhampton's next scoring threat came in the 5th inning when with one out, Katie Cardo was safe at first on a bunt attempt. Pinch runner, Alex Siolos, replaced Cardo with Jenna Mitchell coming to the plate. Mitchell placed a perfect infield hit between third and the pitcher to give Westhampton runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. Ehlinger, who at this point in the game, had thrown only 10 non-strikes to the Westhampton batters, quickly produced a pop-up on a bunt attempt for the second out. With two outs and Haley Fink at the plate, Westhampton attempted a double-steal thwarted by a perfect strike to third by Hauppauge's catcher, Gonzalez, to end the inning.
With the score still tied at 0-0, Hauppauge's next scoring threat came in the bottom of the 6th . With the dangerous Hawthorne leading off, Hawthorne slapped a hard hit ball that ricochet off the third baseman's glove to the pitcher who nearly made the play at first on the speedy Hawthorne. With no outs, Clancy quickly induced a pop-up to the catcher and a fly-out to center for the first and second outs of the inning. With Drago at the plate, Hawthorne stole second on the third pitch, and Drago worked a walk. With the right handed batter Marietta Silliman at the plate, Hauppauge's coach took advantage of the match-up and pulled-off a very close, but well executed double steal. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, and two outs, Clancy was able to pitch her way out of the inning with a fly out to right fielder, Emma Tracy.
The final scoring threat by Westhampton, came in the top of the 8th inning. Sophia Geraci lead-off the inning with a walk and was quickly followed by another walk to the #3 batter, Alexa Lampasona. With no outs and runners on first and second, Hauppauge's coach called time-out and walked out to the mound to calm his pitchers nerves. This well timed conference could not have come at a better time. With the coach returning to the dugout, the confidence and grit on Ehlinger's face was evident! Looking stronger than the earlier innings, Ehlinger struck out the next three batters to end Westhampton's last scoring threat.
In the bottom of the 8th with the score still tied 0-0, Clancy quickly struck out the first batter only to face Hauppauge's feared lead-off batter, Hawthorne. On the second pitch, Hawthorne hit a well struck line-drive over the center fielders head for a stand-up double. With one out and a runner on second, lefty slapper, Devon Valoroso came to the plate. With runners on the corners, Valoroso took second base on defensive indifference. Now, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, the dangerous #3 batter, Alexis Gonzalez came to the plate. With the count 1-0, Gonzalez had the green light to hit away on the next pitch which was hit foul. Only a fly ball to the outfield was needed. With the count 1-1, Gonzalez executed a perfect suicide squeeze placing the bunt to toward the first base side of the pitcher. Clancy quickly pounced on the bunt, flipped home, barely missing the speedy Hawthorne at home.
