Pierson vs Hampton Bays April 7, 2009
Pierson's Samantha Federico:
In both the 1st and 2nd inning, from the catching position, Samantha was an integral part of two double plays that kept the Lady Baymen off the scoreboard. In addition, she pounced on two perfect bunts to make the outs at first base. Samantha was also a part of one of two scoring threats by the Lady Whalers; in the 7th inning with a walk, stolen base, and a wild pitch to third.
Hampton Bay's Marissa Raimo:
Marissa is keeping in tune with the threat of her bat; in the bottom of the third inning, with runners on 2nd and 3rd Marissa hit a bomb over the center fielders head for a two rbi triple making the score 3-0. Defensively, she picked off a runner at third base in the first inning to end Pierson's early scoring threat, threw out a speedy Federico at 2B in the 4th inning and made a great foul ball catch in the 6th inning.

Game Rundown:
In the top of the first inning, Pierson threatened to score with a walk to #3 batter, Kaci Koenne. Koenne stole 2B and advanced to 3B on a wild pitch 3rd strike on #4 batter Samantha Federico, who advanced to 1B. With runners on the corners and two outs, catcher Marissa Raimo called a first and third play faking a throw down to second on a steal by Federico and picked off the runner at third base for the last out of the inning. In the bottom of the 1st inning, pitcher Ali Hultberg lead off the inning with a hard line drive to left field for a single. Hultberg stole 2B base on the next pitch and advanced to third on her second steal with Emily Cortese at the plate. Cortese hit a texas leaguer into right center field where second baseman Kara Gengarelly made a superb over the shoulder catch for the first out. #3 batter Marissa Raimo hit a hard ground ball to third baseman Katie Osiecki who looked back Hultberg at third base and fired a strike to first baseman Sami James. Hultberg broke for home on the throw only to be thrown out at the plate by James on a perfect tag at the plate by Federico for a nifty double play ending the inning.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Hampton Bays threatened again with a walk to #4 batter Liz Raimo who advanced to 2B on a sacrifice bunt by #5 batter Grace Guarino. L. Raimo advanced to third base on a wild pitch with #6 batter Anjelica Barberine at the plate. Barberine put down a bunt, fielded by catcher Federico who fired to first baseman Sami James for the second out, and James quickly fired the ball back to Federico at home plate for the double play retiring the side.
The only runs Hampton Bays would need came in the third inning. The inning began with #7 batter Christine Mortise who singled to right center field and advanced to second on a misplayed ball in the outfield. #8 batter Jess Dubowski was hit by the very next pitch followed by a sacrifice bunt by Megan Pecoraro. With one out lead off batter Ali Hultberg hit a hard ground ball to Katie Osiecki at third who threw home but could not catch the quick running Mortese for the first run of the game. Jess Dubowsky advanced to third on Hultberg's fielders choice while Hultberg stole second base leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd. Stafford struck out the next batter bringing Marissa Raimo to the plate with two outs. On the first pitch from Stafford, Raimo hit a two run triple over the center fielders head giving Hampton Bays a 3-0 lead. Raimo then scored on a miss played ball by the infield hit by her sister Liz Raimo making the score 4-0.
The final scoring by Hampton Bays, was in the bottom of the sixth inning. Liz Raimo lead off with a single up the middle followed by a single to left by Kayla Duval. With two outs, Raimo and Duval on second and third, Morgan Orego hit a 2 rbi single to left center field giving Hampton Bays the win 6-0.
Hampton Bay's Senior Pitcher, Ali Hultberg, finished the day with 92 pitches of which 64 were strikes, 7 strikeouts, 2 hits, 3 walks and no runs. Pierson's freshman pitcher Melanie Stafford (sister of last year's pitcher, Laura Stafford) had a very efficient day throwing a total of 72 pitches of which 47 were strikes. Stafford walked one and struck out 2. Hampton Bays is now 3-0 League/5-0 Overall; Pierson is now 1-2 League/ 1-4 Overall.
