Game Rundown:
Weber labored through the 2nd inning as it appeared her leg was bothering her and hurting her control as she threw an unusual 11 balls that inning. Brentwood couldn't capitalize and the score remained 2-0 Bay Shore.
In the top of the third Shaakira Samad reached on an infield single and was followed by Hillary Genova's single to left. Vanessa Acosta singled to center to drive in Samad and Brentwood was on the board. On the hit Vanessa tried to stretch her single and was thrown out at second. Nicole Flint drove a sac fly ball to right and the score was knotted at 2.
The top of the 4th brought us some strange happenings. Lead off hitter Lauren Buscemi popped one up between the pitcher and catcher which is usually a sure out but the ball was misplayed for an infield single. With one out Erica Edwards singled up the middle and on the play the Brentwood runner made a wide turn at second and as Bay Shore attempted to get her at second she looked to get back safely but she was standing on the shortstop's foot and not the base and was called out for the second out. Then what turned out to be the turning point of the game where Alexa Santiago beat out a soft ground ball to short, as she ran hard down the line to beat the throw and keep Brentwood's hopes alive. Shaakira Samad came to the plate and on the first pitch attempted a surprise bunt but missed the ball for strike one. On the next pitch she hit one in the right field parking lot for a 3 run homer. As the Brentwood team was jumping and screaming and waiting for Shaakira at home plate, in all her excitement as she headed for home she took off her helmet and was greeted by everyone as the team headed for the dugout. While Brentwood was celebrating Coach McGowan wanted Shaakira called out for taking off her helmet before touching home. The Ump's did not want to call her out but Coach McGowan wanted the protest committee to step in. Coach said a rule is a rule and he wanted the out. After about a 15 minute delay and a meeting with all the ump's and the protest committee the call stood and the home run counted. According to the Umpire's, the rule calls for an out if the runner takes off her helmet during live play and since the ball was hit out of the park, the ball was dead and they would not call her out. After 31/2 innings Brentwood led 5-2.
Taylor McGowan replaced Weber in the top of the 5th and retired 6 out of the first 7 hitters she faced to keep Bay Shore in striking distance. Brentwood was cruising along with a 5-2 lead heading into the 6th and Nicole Flint had retired 13 hitters in a row. Bay Shore did not have a base runner reach base since the first inning and it looked like she had number 14 as she got Weber to pop up to the infield. The pop up was misplayed and with Weber hustling all the way it turned into a 2 base error. Cat Franzone followed with a single up the middle and Bay Shore closed within 2. Taylor McGowan and Jackie Masoni walked to load the bases. Nicole struck out the next hitter and had 8th grader Jamie Mullane down in the count 0-2 with 2 outs. Mullane drove the 0-2 pitch for a single as two runs scored to tie the game at 5.
In the top of the 7th Samad and Genova walked to lead off the inning as Brentwood showed they were not going to lay down. Vanessa Acosta singled to knock in Samad and give Brentwood the lead back at 6-5. Nicole Flint then doubled to knock in 2 more runs and just like that Brentwood had an 8-5 lead. Bay Shore escaped the rest of the inning but the damage was done as they came to the plate down 3.
Nikki Surkes led off with a single and Liz Weber hit a bomb to left that might have made it out if there was a fence but the Brentwood leftfielder tracked it down for the first out. The next hitter Franzone crushed one that had left fielder Vikki Castillo on her horse again. This ball would have definitely been long gone but Vikki tracked it down again for the second out of the inning. Flint struck out the next hitter to end the game as Brentwood takes a 1 game lead in the best of 3 series.
The next game is at Brentwood on Saturday.
Final Score: Brentwood 8, Bay Shore 5
