Game Rundown:
Connetquot vs. Whitman
The pitching match up today featured Connetquot 10th grader Kristina Cuellar vs. Whitman's Christine Lucido. In the first inning, Lucido mowed down Connetquot to keep her end of the bargain, however, it was not so easy for Cuellar. After a pop out to 2nd for the first out things started to look bad for Connetquot. A hit, walk and a hit batter loaded the bases but Cuellar performed her first magic trick of the day getting the next 2 to ground out to keep the score tied at 0.
Whitman got on the board first in the bottom of the 3rd. Whitman again loaded the bases on 2 walks and a bunt single and then scored their first run when Cuellar walked Ali Delprete. Kristina then struck out the next 2 batters to escape another bases loaded jam and kept the damage to only 1 run.
In the top of the 5th Emily Mazzaro had a one out double to break up Lucido's no hit bid. That was the second consecutive day Mazzaro has spoiled a no-hitter (in the seventh vs. Bay Shore). Emily's hit was followed by a bunt single by Maria Compitello that was misplayed and allowed Mazzaro to score form 2nd and Maria ending up at 3rd base. Amanda Schoenfeld then hit a sac fly to give Connetquot a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the 6th Whitman's Jackie Wurtz led off with a single, Elizabeth Quinn dropped a beautiful sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by Connetquot and Whitman had 1st and 2nd with no outs. Cuellar struck out the next batter for the first out but then Lauren Alexandra stroked a line drive double to right-center tying the score and putting Whitman in a position to break open the game, but a base running mistake turned 2nd and 3rd with one out into a runner on 2nd with 2 outs. Cuellar again stepped it up by getting the next batter to ground out and keep the score tied at 2.
In the top of the 7th Connetquot's Marissa Monico hit a one out double to right-center. After a ground ball out advanced the runner to 3rd Monico scored on a passed ball to give Connetquot a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the 7th Cuellar again played with fire walking Samantha Fregenti for the 4th time in the game. Fregenti was removed for pinch runner Lilly Naqvi, a move that seemed to pay off as the next hitter Ali Delprete singled to center. Naqvi tried go from first to 3rd on the single but centerfielder Marissa Monaco fired a missile to 3rd to cut down the runner for the second out. Cuellar got the next out and the 3-2 win for Connetquot.
Cuellar pitched in and out of trouble all day but kept finding a way out of trouble. Kristina walked 7 batters and let up 7 hits but Connetquot got the outs when she needed them as Whitman stranded 11 runners.
